Every language learning app eventually faces the same problem: it's easy to teach words and grammar rules, but hard to teach someone to actually speak. Speaking requires a partner. A patient one who won't judge you, won't get tired, and will gently correct you every single time without making you feel bad about it.
That's what we set out to build with Bulgify's AI tutor.
The correction problem
Most people learning a language are terrified of making mistakes. This is the single biggest barrier to speaking fluency. Our tutor needed to correct errors in a way that felt encouraging, not embarrassing — more like a kind teacher pulling you aside, less like red pen on a test paper.
We spent a lot of time on this. The tutor doesn't interrupt mid-sentence. It finishes the conversation turn, then briefly and warmly notes what could be improved. Then it moves on. The conversation keeps flowing.
Adapting to your level
A beginner who just learned the alphabet shouldn't get the same conversation as someone who's been studying for three months. The tutor reads signals from your responses — vocabulary you use, sentence structure, how often you ask for translations — and adjusts its language accordingly.
It starts with simple sentences and common words. As you progress, it introduces more complex grammar, longer responses, and less reliance on translating things for you.
Scenarios, not free chat
Open-ended "chat in Bulgarian" is overwhelming for beginners. Instead, we give you scenarios: ordering at a café, introducing yourself, asking for directions in Sofia. A clear context means you know roughly what words you'll need, which makes the conversation feel achievable rather than infinite.
As your confidence grows, the scenarios get more open-ended. Eventually you're just talking — about your day, your opinions, whatever comes up.
What we got wrong first
Early versions of the tutor were too formal. It corrected too much, too precisely, in ways that killed the conversational flow. We also found that pure chat without structure left beginners frozen — they didn't know how to start.
The current version is the result of months of iteration. It's not perfect, but it feels like talking to someone who genuinely wants you to succeed. That was the goal.
