The first thing people say when they decide to learn Bulgarian is: "I'll have to learn a whole new alphabet." Then they look at Cyrillic, see letters like Ж, Щ, and Ъ, and quietly close the tab.
We get it. But here's the truth: the Bulgarian Cyrillic alphabet has 30 letters, and most learners can recognize all of them within a week of consistent practice. The trick is sequence.
Start with the familiar
About a third of Cyrillic letters look similar to Latin ones: А, Е, О, К, М, Т. Some are identical in shape, others nearly so. Starting here lets you build momentum before tackling anything unfamiliar.
Group by sound families
Rather than learning letters in alphabetical order, Bulgify groups them by where they sit in your mouth. Vowels first, then pairs of consonants that share the same place of articulation. Your brain connects the sounds faster when they're presented as a system, not a list.
Read real words from day one
As soon as you know five letters, you can read Bulgarian words. Real ones — мама (mama), тато (dad), кафе (coffee). This is important. Your brain needs the payoff of reading actual language to stay motivated through the unfamiliar parts.
The "weird" letters aren't that weird
Ж sounds like the "s" in "measure." Ш is "sh." Щ is "sht." Ъ is the sound in the middle of "butter." Once you learn what they sound like, they stop looking alien — they just look like the sounds they represent.
The alphabet isn't the wall everyone expects it to be. It's the warm-up. Most learners who commit to 10 minutes a day for a week come out the other side able to read Bulgarian out loud — slowly, but accurately. That feeling is the fuel for everything that follows.
